About Us - Our History

1995 A cross-section of dedicated people in Owatonna, Minnesota, began discussing the increase in ethnic and racial diversity occurring locally. As a result, they started a service-oriented organization to deliver furniture and meet the basic needs of newcomers. They also dedicated themselves to learning about the needs of the new populations and helping the community understand more about the many issues of diversity.
1998 Became a United Way agency and a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization. Hired part-time staff.
June 2001 Hired our first executive director.
August 2001 Approved as a site for the AmeriCorps national service program.
September 2001 CulturFest was designated an "Arts Across Minnesota Festival" with support from the Minnesota State Arts Board for 2002. CulturFest has since become an annual fall celebration in Owatonna, now entering its fifth year.
